Hong Kong, China’s men’s rugby sevens team successfully retained their title at the Asian Games on Saturday. They beat the national squad in dominant fashion, 26-0, marking their third consecutive gold at the Games. The SAR started strong with a 21-0 lead by halftime. Despite multiple attempts to score by the national team, Hong Kong proved far too strong for their opponent, scoring one more try in the second half to secure the victory. Host nation Japan took bronze in the match against South Korea. In the women’s contest, it was a repeat of the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou – with the SAR facing off against Thailand once again for the bronze medal. The squad showcased their determination to make the city proud following their medal’s debut last time, defeating Thailand again, 7-5. Japan clinched gold and the national team silver. Following the third-place playoff, Chong Ka-yan told reporters that the team felt the weight of expectations to secure another medal, noting that the Nagoya Games could be the final appearance for several of her teammates.
