Korea should approach Trump with business mindset, Sunny Park says

When Sunny K. Park arrived in the United States in 1974 with just $200 in his pocket, he had little idea that he would one day become a successful Korean American entrepreneur with extensive ties to Washington. Park, now 84 and president of the American Korean Friendship Society, was 32 when he moved to Indiana to study at Indiana University. Having grown up in poverty and survived the 1950-53 Korean War, he recalled seeing America as a “paradise” filled with opportunities. Two years later, however, he left school to support his family and began selling life insurance door to door. His involvement with the Korean immigrant community eventually led him into a different line of work. While helping newly arrived Koreans find jobs, Park noticed growing demand in the commercial cleaning industry. “Korean immigrants came into the U.S., but they had a tough time to get a job, so I helped them and that brought me to a new industry — commercial cleaning,” Park told The Korea Times. “That business became so popular and it doubled in just one year. PM vows continued efforts to resume inter-Korean dialogue

Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said Sunday that the government will strive to lay the groundwork for the resumption of dialogue between Seoul and Pyongyang and seek peaceful co-existence. "Efforts will be made to open the door for dialogue between South Korea and North Korea and to hold talks on peace and joint prosperity," Han said, as she attended a presidential sporting competition for displaced North Korean residents held in Seoul. She called inter-Korean division a "reality," also highlighting that the pains of displaced residents and separated families are "ongoing." "Our efforts to open the road to peaceful coexistence of South Korea and North Korea cannot stop," said the prime minister, asking for the participants' support in establishing peace and thanking them for contributing to South Korea's economic development and democratization.

Banking on bricks: entrepreneur builds a business case for recycling plastic waste

Former investment banker Shervin Sharghy takes a practical approach to plastic recycling, first asking whether it makes financial sense before tackling the technical challenges. The founder of Hong Kong-based EcoBricks said the main obstacle to recycling plastic was often economic rather than scientific. Collecting, sorting, cleaning and processing waste plastic typically costs more than producing new materials from oil and gas, particularly at the small scale at which most recyclers...
