The Transport Department said eight applications had been lodged for ride-hailing service licences by the deadline at noon on Friday. The department said the number of applications reflected a positive response from the sector. Representatives from the Transport and Logistics Bureau, the Digital Policy Office and the Transport Department will assess the applications and make recommendations to the transport commissioner, with the aim of announcing the qualified platforms before the year ends. “We will carefully assess each application to ensure that licensed platforms have the necessary operational and financial capabilities to provide safe, reliable and efficient ride-hailing services sustainably,” a spokesman said. The department, he added, will unveil details for vehicle-driving as well as vehicle permits in due course. Edited by Edmond Fong
