In a massive community effort, Los Angeles’s #1 rated talk radio station, KFI AM 640, spearheaded a fundraiser to help stamp out hunger in Southern California that broke its targeted goals. The 12th Annual PastaThon raised $1,173,803 and 35,818 pounds of pasta and sauce for Caterina’s Club, the nonprofit founded by Sir Bruno Serato that feeds hot meals to some 5,000 children each day and offers free food to families in need.
Listeners of KFI AM 640 turned out in droves over the 6 day drive, which was sponsored by a number of community partners such as Smart & Final, Wendy’s and Barilla pasta. Also fueling the effort was an increase in the number of drop-off sites like Serato’s own Anaheim White House Italian Steakhouse and soccer legend Alessa Del Piero’s LA restaurant N1 making it easier for listeners to give.
“I cannot even begin to express my gratitude to KFI AM 640 and the station’s extremely generous listeners who helped us exceed our fundraising goals,” says Serato, founder of the nonprofit that he named for his beloved mother. “KFI AM 640’s Annual PastaThon is, by far, our biggest annual fundraiser and we rely on its success to help us fulfill our mission of service. I am particularly grateful to Bill Handel, Jennifer Jones Lee, Gary and Shannon, John and Ken, Tim Conway, Jr. and the others at KFI AM 640 who gave so tirelessly, generously and selflessly to help us stamp out hunger in Southern California.”
“It gives all of us at the station great pleasure to sponsor KFI AM 640’s annual PastaThon, an event that brings together our team at the station with our listeners, advertisers and community partners who are working together for a common goal — to stamp out hunger right here in our own backyard,” says Robin Bertolucci, President of KFI-AM 640. “On behalf of the entire KFI team, we thank our listeners and the community, in general, for their continued generosity.”
Adds KFI AM 640 Executive Producer Michelle Kube, “As we’ve seen in the past and from this year’s record-breaking fundraising effort, it’s clear that KFI listeners are the most generous, compassionate and caring souls on the planet. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts.”
In addition to feeding the hungry, the nonprofit also finds permanent housing for families in need and introduces at-risk youth to careers in hospitality. For his work on behalf of Caterina’s Club, Serato has earned international publicity including profiles in People Magazine and has appeared on countless TV news and talk shows including “The Drew Barrymore Show,” “Access Hollywood,” “CBS Evening News” and “NBC Nightly News.” Among his many honors: CNN Hero, knighted by both the Italian government and the House of Savoy, Ellis Island Medal of Honor, a papal blessing from Pope Francis, humanitarian award on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, and numerous proclamations, Man of the Year awards and other forms of recognition — all of which he accepts to generate public awareness of Caterina’s Club.
