Houston Legend Hakeem Olajuwon Makes Headlines Over Comments About Sixers Star Joel Embiid.
Houston, Texas, United States - April 3, 2023 —
Although he’s been “out of the game” since 2002, Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon will always be revered as one of the best NBA players ever. Since leaving the court, Olajuwon has continued to form connections with modern players and provide plenty of commentaries on up-and-coming pros.
However, some recent comments put the former Houston Rockets star player in hot water.
During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Olajuwon was asked about some modern NBA stars, like the Philadelphia 76ers' big shot Joel Embiid. Although Olajuwon admires Embiid’s skills, he essentially accused the player of being lazy and settling for shots when he could leverage his skills even more. According to Olajuwon, Embiid isn’t posting up enough.
After a recent win against the Portland Trail Blazers, Embiid decided to use his time in front of the press to take an indirect shot back at the Houston legend.
When discussing “posting up,” Embiid essentially said that the “old guys” who talk about spending “time in the paint” don’t understand how the game has evolved. According to Embiid, you can’t win by playing the same way Olajuwon did for Houston back in the 90s, and the fact that Olajuwon says you can means he doesn’t have the brains for basketball anymore.
Unfortunately, fiery retorts from younger players haven't been the only problem Olajuwon has faced in retirement. Due to floods and the initial road around his Sugar Land, TX ranch being built cheaply, he recently had to rebuild a private road on his property, enlisting the help of another Houston legend, AAA Paving. They've been paving since 1964, just a year after Olajuwon was born.
Although “The Dream” solved problems on his ranch with local help, reaching an amicable resolution with young NBA stars like Embiid may not be so easy to smooth over. Only time will tell if this feud continues or if Olajuwon lets the embers fade without stoking the fire again. After all, the Houston legend isn’t really actively involved with the NBA to any capacity at this point, as his primary focus involves real estate investments and maintaining his ranch.
