The winning authors for the Ink of Ages Historical Short Fiction Prize have been announced.
Surrey, United Kingdom Jan 24, 2024 (Issuewire.com) - World History Encyclopedia announced the short stories that have been selected as the official winners of the Ink of Ages Fiction Prize, an international writing competition that highlights historical or mythology-inspired short fiction, sponsored by Oxford University Press. "These often very moving stories, inspired by world history and mythology, were a privilege to read. It was a joy to see emerging voices and experienced writers bringing everything from local folklore to classics, and from lesser-known historical events to unique takes on familiar ones, to life," says Joanne Taylor of World History Encyclopedia.
The contest was highly international and diverse, in terms of storytelling style, content, and subjects covered. "Unique as each one is, all the stories make their mark," commented Timothy Bent, Editor at Oxford University Press. Louise Pryke, Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney greatly enjoyed the judging process: "What amazed me about the submissions was the diversity of styles and choices of subject, which I thought was really wonderful."
The winning stories are:
First Prize: "Circles in the Sand" by Sallyann Halstead
Second Prize: "Myrrhine" by Jenyth Evans
Third Prize: "A Somewhat Laughing Matter" by Bill C. Wilson
Highly Commended:
"The Untold Story of the Murder of Isis" by Victoria Alvear
"After the Siege" by Daniel Wan
All winning stories will be published on the Ink of Ages contest website at: https://fictionprize.worldhistory.org
A grand total of 148 authors submitted short fiction stories and the five winners have been chosen by the judging panel based on literary merit, originality and creativity, historical interest, and enjoyment. Fox (author), Helen Nde (author and mythology researcher), Stefan Vranka (Oxford University Press), Wendy Orr (author), David Tollen (author and speaker), Louise M.
