China, Japan protest US probe into need for auto tariffs

May 24, 2018

BEIJING — China and Japan both condemned Thursday the Trump administration's decision to launch an investigation into whether tariffs are needed on imports of vehicles and automotive parts into the United States. China's Commerce Ministry said Beijing would "firmly defend" its rights and interests against what it called the Trump administration's abuse of national security provisions in trade. Japan's minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Hiroshige Seko, said Japan, which accounts for about 40 percent of U.S. vehicle imports, will continue to remind U.S. officials that any trade measures must conform to the rules of the World Trade Organization. If...

May 24, 2018

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia — Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was being questioned again Thursday by anti-graft investigators looking into alleged theft and money laundering at a state investment fund he had founded that accumulated billions in debt. Najib smiled and waved at reporters before entering the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission building for the second time since his shocking ouster in May 9 national elections that were marked by public anger over the scandal. He has denied any wrongdoing but Malaysia's new anti-graft chief has said Najib could face criminal charges "very soon." He was questioned for more than four hours Tuesday,...

Trump administration explores tariffs on autos, auto parts

May 24, 2018

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration launched an investigation into whether tariffs are needed on the imports of automobiles into the United States, moving swiftly as talks over the North American Free Trade Agreement have stalled. President Donald Trump predicted earlier that U.S. automakers and auto workers would be "very happy" with the outcome of the NAFTA talks. The White House said in a statement Wednesday that the president had asked Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to consider whether the imports of automobiles, including trucks, and automotive parts threaten U.S. national security. The president said in the statement that "core industries such...

Las Vegas strike would have far-reaching effect

May 24, 2018

LAS VEGAS — What happens in Las Vegas could have a ripple effect across the country if 50,000 casino-hotel workers employed at more than 30 of the city's world-famous resorts go on strike at any time starting next week. If members of the union that includes hotel and food workers don't show up to work, it could cost the destination millions and lead to travel woes for anyone taking a vacation or business trip to Sin City. It could also send casinos looking for temporary workers amid low unemployment rates. Analysts declined Wednesday to weigh in on the financial impact...
