John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, dies at 89

Jan 18, 2019

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — John C. Bogle, who simplified investing for the masses by launching the first index mutual fund and founded Vanguard Group, died Wednesday, the company said. He was 89. Bogle did not invent the index fund, but he expanded access to no-frills, low-cost investing in 1976 when Vanguard introduced the first index fund for individual investors, rather than institutional clients. The emergence of funds that passively tracked market indexes, like the Standard & Poor's 500, enabled investors to avoid the higher fees charged by professional fund managers who frequently fail to beat the market. More often than...

John Bogle dies at 89; fought for lower fees for investors

Jan 18, 2019

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — When he lost his job running a mutual fund company after stocks tanked in the early 70's, John C. Bogle decided that money managers knew very little about predicting the market — and charged way too much for that lack of knowledge. He founded a new fund company, Vanguard, in 1974. Two years later, Vanguard introduced the first index fund for individual investors — a vehicle that simply tracks the performance of an index like the S&P 500. It was no frills and enabled investors to avoid the higher fees assessed by professional fund managers who...

US lawmaker opposes drilling permit work during shutdown

Jan 18, 2019

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The oil and gas industry should not be spared the pain of the partial government shutdown, according to the chairman of the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee. Rep. Raul Grijalva (gri-HAWL-vah) on Tuesday sent a letter to Acting Interior Secretary David Bernhardt objecting to the department changing plans to allow employees to work on upcoming offshore lease sales, seismic permits and a five-year offshore oil and gas leasing plan in Alaska and elsewhere. "One of the most striking features of the current government shutdown, brought about entirely by the President's insistence on building an entirely unnecessary border...

CSX delivers quarterly profit in line with Wall Street views

Jan 18, 2019

OMAHA, Neb. — CSX Corp. delivered a fourth-quarter profit of $843 million, which was lower than last year when tax reforms were approved but in line with Wall Street expectations. The Jacksonville, Florida-based railroad said Wednesday it earned $1.01 per share net income in the quarter that ended Dec. 31. That's down from last year's $4.14 billion, or $4.62 per share, which was affected by tax reforms and restructuring charges. Without last year's one-time gains, CSX said earned 64 cents per share in fourth quarter 2017. CSX's profits were in line with the $1.01 earnings per share that analysts surveyed...

Markets Right Now: Banks lead stock gains on Wall Street

Jan 18, 2019

NEW YORK — The latest on developments in financial markets (all times local): 4 p.m. Strong earnings from several big banks powered more gains on Wall Street, with Goldman Sachs and Bank of America leading the way. Goldman Sachs jumped 9.5 percent Wednesday, its biggest gain in 10 years, after the bank said gains in its advisory business offset a rough quarter in trading. The bank had been lagging the market in recent months. Bank of America climbed 6.7 percent as rising interest rates helped it make more money from lending. Other sectors didn't move as much. Communications companies fell....
